Home News AHFA Responds to MVC with Medevac

An Atlantic Highlands resident was flown by helicopter Aug. 26 after his car smashed into a parked van that then exploded into flames.

The Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad along with the Atlantic Highlands Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a car accident and a working fire near the intersection of West Washington Ave and Avenue D Friday afternoon.

The incident started when the driver of a small sedan rammed into the rear of a parked van, which then propelled the van vehicle into one in front of it. The gas tank on the van burst into flames on impact.  The victim was pulled from the vehicle by bystanders.

Upon arrival, the fire department attacked the fire while members of the AHFAS immediately began care of the driver, who was significantly injured.

"Initial reports had the Squad responding as scene support for a car fire, which escalated to treating a critical patient.  We reacted quickly and began treating for life threatening injuries," said Tom Hayden, captain of the AHFAS.

The Atlantic Highlands Police Department requested a medevac.

MONOC paramedics in Unit 206 responded to the scene, and helped prepare the patient for transport aboard MONOC 1, the organization’s medical helicopter. The chopper touched down on Fireman’s Field in Atlantic Highlands and, after the patient was transferred from the AHFAS ambulance, rushed the patient Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

"The Atlantic Highlands First and Squad and Fire Department worked together to manage a serious accident.  We regularly train together so that situations like this are brought under control fast," said Hayden.
